Esperanza dreams.
Through a tear-stained fog, images and sounds and ideas flitter like broken glass. The rustle of giant obsidian wings beating softly in the night sky. Icy fingers comb through tangled hair. Three women, deaf, blind, and mute, scramble through a forest. A grinning skull with silky red feathers adorning it like hair. Hot breathe on prickly skin.
Esperanza stands on a precipice, a rocky ledge over a vast chasm. Above her head the blood red sky churns and roils, and now and then ghostly faces appear and morph and disintegrate in the mass of crimson clouds. Below her the mountain disappears into swirling blue mists, a glimmering fog that blocks her view of whatever lies below. Pinpricks of light shine through the fog, dimming and swelling in complex patterns.
"What's out there?" she asks out loud, and she knows the answer even before it comes.
"Stars and sky, Hermana." the voice says from behind her as Chrys steps out of the darkness and stands beside her "Hopes and fears."
She gestures at Esperanza's hands.
"You should be careful with those."
Looking down, Esperanza finds that she is holding two beautiful white roses, their stems entwining around her slender wrists. She sees the blood dripping from where the sharp thorns have pierced her skin, but she feels no pain.
"What are they for?" she asks her friend.
"They're for you, big sister. Your links to the world in days to come. Without them you'd be lost."
As Esperanza watches, the roses grow and change, becoming two white doves with blood red markings, liquid stains of crimson on white. The doves coo and peck in her hands for a moment and then take flight out over the shrouded chasm, carefully tracing a path between sky and mist, between heaven and hell, until they are lost from sight. Esperanza watches them fly with a growing knot of fear forming in her stomach.
"Chrys..." she says, almost in a whimper, "They're gone. What do I do now?"
Chrys laughs, her smile doing little to relieve the growing dread that Esperanza feels.
"Now you jump, silly. That's why you're here."
"I..." Esperanza begins, her voice faltering, "I can fly... I think I can."
"Not here." Chrys says, her voice taking on a sad tone, "Here you either rise or fall, and you can't know which until you try."
"Do I have to?" Esperanza asks.
"I'm afraid so." Chrys says, "You've been here for too long. Your friends need you. You have to help them. You can't do that from here, all alone. It's time for you to move on."
Chrys smiles. Esperanza nods. She knows it's the truth. They're counting on her.
"Don't worry. I'll always be here... if you can find your way back." Chrys says.
She steps forward, her arms open to embrace her friend, and Ronnie steps into her, not wanting to leave, but knowing she must. But as she does, Chrys' form swirls and parts into mist, and Esperanza tumbles forward, her mind reeling as she falls over the edge, plummeting down the side of the cliff, screaming as the swirling mists rush up at her.

Ronnie awoke with a gasp, her eyes snapping open as Nils kissed her lightly on the forehead.
"Chrys!" she gasped.
After a moment she remembered where she was... who she was, and her pulse began to slow.
"Oh god... Nils... I'm so sorry. I... I had a dream..."
