Ronnie smiled. Chrys was about as hard to read as a coloring book. Her crush on Simon was something Ronnie had figured out weeks ago, but this was the first confirmation she'd managed to get from her.

"Don't worry, Chiquita, your secret is safe with me." she said, "But how are you ever gonna know if this 'guy-you-like-who-shall-remain-nameless' likes you unless you say something?"

"I'm sorry, are you lecturing me about the value of a good unrequited crush?" Chrys smirked over her migas.

"I'm always happy to hear your advice, Ronnie, but, come on. Pots and kettles are painted from the same palette, if you catch my meaning." Finally, a genuine smile crossed Chrys' face.

"I mean, are you planning on telling your non-suitor you're interested?"

Ronnie sighed and poked at her eggs with her fork, pushing them around her plate. She hated to admit it, but Chrys was right. As much as She liked to consider herself a font of wisdom and advice, Chrys had an almost creepy knack for seeing through bullshit and cutting right to the heart of matters.

"You know", she said, with a grin "You have an annoying habit of being completely right. Tell you what, let's both forget we ever said anything and we can both keep wallowing in our own respective unrequited miseries."

She thought for a moment and considered that she still wasn't really being fair with Chrys. How could she really expect Chrys to trust her with what she knew if she wasn't being just as honest. And if anyone was trustworthy enough for the truth it was certainly Chrys.

"And I promise I won't say anything to... You-know-who...", she continued, "If you promise not to say anything... to Nils."

Chrys' eyes widened for a moment, but softened immediately.

"Oh, yikes, um, Ronnie, I didn't mean to...I'm sorry. I wasn't calling you out. Yes, I like Simon. A lot. But that's neither here nor there. I know he likes me, but in a sibling-type way. I'm ok with that. Or as much as I can be."

She reached over to put her hand on Ronnie's.

"You don't have to say anything about...Nils if you don't want to. I know he likes you a lot, just...you're not equipped like he likes. And, lets face it, woman, you are equipped." Chrys smirked, giving Ronnie's hand a gentle squeeze before letting go.

"Its all way more complicated than I'd like to deal with. Or simpler. One of the two."

Ronnie smiled genuinely and put her hand on Chrys' arm.

"It's ok, Chica, I know you weren't trying to call me out, but I think I needed to call myself out. I know I'm not exactly equipped for Nils' tastes, and I do value his friendship a lot. That's why I haven't said anything. I don't want things to get weird over a stupid crush that has about as much chance as a snowball in hell. But... it's good to finally admit it to someone."

"Well, to be fair, yeah, I guess Simon has a better chance with Nils than either of us might have with them." Chrys paused, her eyes distant, an only half-fake smile on her face. "Man, I'd buy that DVD. Ahem." She rolled her eyes and sighed.

"But I digress. Do I take that to mean, if circumstances arose where you might have a chance, you'd actually go for it?"

    Ronnie laughed.

"I'm not sure I can imagine a situation where it would be an option. No matter what the religious nuts may have us believe people don't just spontaneously switch their sexual identity. I know I have to face the idea that it's never gonna happen. But I can still dream, right?"

She took a sip of her tea and looked thoughtful for a second before sighing.

"Damnit, yeah, I'd buy that DVD too. On Blu-Ray."

"Oh, on the note of visual exploitation, I was wondering if I could get you to model for me. I'm always looking for new people to paint, and I think it'd be fun. And, unlike your day job, well, night job, you can keep your clothes on if you want." Chrys smiled over her tea, eyebrows fluttering.

Ronnie smirked at Chrys' fluttering eyelashes. She was a real charmer when she wanted to be.

"I'd be honored, Chiquita. I love the paintings of yours that I've seen so far. You have a lot of talent. To be honest, though I've never modelled for anyone before. What would I need to do?"

"Well thank you, Ronnie," Chrys replied, blushing. "I've been lucky to have good subjects."

"As for modelling, you just have to stand perfectly still for a couple of hours." She went back to eating for a few long seconds, letting that sink in. Finally, she chuckled and continued.

"Just kidding. I'd do a couple of sketches of you in various poses, take a couple of pictures for reference. It really wouldn't take too long."

"You're a spaz" Ronnie laughed, "Yeah, I can do that. Just... promise me one thing? If you paint me... could you maybe... kinda... leave out the scar? I'm kinda self-conscious about it...."

Chrys would probably assume that Ronnie was referring to the thin scar that ran along her left collarbone that was almost invisible except from up close.

"Uh, ok, sure, Ronnie, I can leave it out. My work tends to be a little abstract anyway."

Chrys quieted for a moment, her gaze not meeting Ronnie's. Finally, she raised her eyes to her friend's.

"Ronnie, what happened? I've never heard you really mention it before."

Ronnie tried to smile reassuringly, but it felt forced. It wasn't something she thought about much anymore, but whenever she did she could still feel the blade sliding across her skin.

"It... it's nothing, Chica. Just a close call a long time ago."

She shook the memory from her mind and smiled again, genuinely this time.

"I suppose everyone has at least a couple scars, huh? Some are just more visible than others."
