Aimee's breathing came out in measured beats, timed with the coordinated slaps of her and Bea's feet hitting the pavement. They maintained a relatively simple pace, but, with their newly-enhanced constitutions, Max was barely keeping up. Noticing him lagging behind, the leash growing more taught behind them, Aimee slowed for a few paces and stopped. She knelt, scratching Max behind the ears, mostly avoiding a deluge of slobbery kisses.
"Who's a good dog, huh Maxie?" Aimee smiled, looking over to see Bea stretching, keeping her knee flexed for the run back down the trail. Aimee rolled her head, stretching her neck muscles, commenting, "Great day for this, huh? Glad to have some warm weather for a change."
Aimee paused, seeming to steel herself for some task, before speaking again hesitantly.
"Bea, I've been meaning to talk to you about something. A couple of things, actually." Aimee stood and looked at Max, pointedly keeping her eyes off her friend. "With all that's been happening, I've been trying to not think about it, keep focused on other things, but you're the only person I know who might know what I'm talking about." She swallowed nervously, but continued. "Once we had assurance Chrys was murdered, I've been thinking about what we're going to do when we found the killer. And we did, and...and I stabbed her. I didn't think about it, I didn't hesitate, I just...tried to kill her. I'm just so angry, and I'm worried that this is just the beginning."
