    Questionnaire (Aimee) Empty Questionnaire (Aimee)

Post by Josh 06/03/10, 03:52 am

(Questionnaire is from Gotham Writer's Workshop at http://www.writingclasses.com/Informati ... PageID/106)

Q: What is your character’s name? Does the character have a nickname?
A: Aimee Lynn Solleau. She's had a lot of random pet names from Connie, but none have really stuck.

Q: What is your character’s hair color? Eye color?
A: Naturally, extremely light blond, but she dyes it often. Currently, its her natural color with a few streaks of purple and blue. Her eyes are pale blue.

Q: What kind of distinguishing facial features does your character have?
A: None to really speak of. Aimee is perfectly pretty, but no individual facial feature really stands out.

Q: Does your character have a birthmark? Where is it? What about scars? How did he get them?
A: No birthmarks to speak of, but Aimee has several minor scars from an active childhood. Her most noticeable one is on her right calf, from the time she and Joanna ran afoul the junkyard dog while waiting for their father.

Q: Who are your character’s friends and family? Who does she surround herself with? Who are the people your character is closest to? Who does he wish he were closest to?
A: Aimee's family is her mother Rachel, a teacher, and her father Joe, a chemical engineer; her two sisters, Pennelope Anne and Joanna Beth; her greandparents Sean and Mary Mackelroy and Amos and Adele Solleau; and her brother in law Jackson. Her closest friends, rather obviously, are Constance, Nils, Chrys (well, Aimee wouldn't remember to exclude her yet), Ronnie, Bea, and Simon; plus Adam Spitzer (her ren-fair musical partner) and the members of the Voodoo Banshees (Mike, Sybil, Doreen, and Carl). Having known Nils for so long, Aimee is very interested to get to know this Chad person a lot better. Of these, it would be hard to pick out which Aimee is closest to, other than Connie. Of her family, Aimee is closest to her youngest sister Jo Beth. She wishes she and Penelope got along better, but doesn't know how to go about doing that.

Q: Where was your character born? Where has she lived since then? Where does she call home?
A: Aimee was born in Beaumont, Texas. Since then, she grew up in Kountze, and moved to College Station in 2004 when she started college. Home to her is the apartment she shares with Connie, though she probably still refers to her parents' house as home too.

Q: Where does your character go when he’s angry?
A: One of two places: Either she shuts herself in her studio and passive-aggressively plays loud and fast music, or she leaves to take and entirely too fast and unsafe ride on her motorcycle.

Q: What is her biggest fear? Who has she told this to? Who would she never tell this to? Why?
A: Given her relatively comfortable life (up til recently), her biggest fear is that Constance will "figure out" that Aimee is not good enough for her and leave. Its possible she's confessed this fear to Nils and/or Ronnie, though she'd exact a promise of utmost secrecy before revealing it. She definitely never plans of saying anything about it to Constance.

Q: Does she have a secret?
A: Honestly, only the same secret everyone has, that of her divine heritage, and its one she obviously doesn't know herself.

Q: What makes your character laugh out loud?
A: Aimee is a sucker for physical comedy. Chaplin, Keaton, Belushi, all hilarious to her.

Q: When has your character been in love? Had a broken heart?
A: Aimee has had two big loves in her life: her freshman year girlfriend Maria, and Constance. Maria treated her terribly, and both the year they dated and the year after their breakup were not good times for Aimee.

Then dig deeper by asking more unconventional questions:

Q: What is in your character’s refrigerator right now? On her bedroom floor? On her nightstand? In her garbage can?
A: Probably some left-over takeout food, and possibly left-overs of something Ronnie made. Clothes that Constance hasn't bugged her enough to pick up yet. Given the week, something she's read before for comfort. A lot of paper with discarded lyrics.

Q: Look at your character’s feet. Describe what you see there. Does he wear dress shoes, gym shoes, or none at all? Is he in socks that are ratty and full of holes? Or is he wearing a pair of blue and gold slippers knitted by his grandmother?
A: In the summer, barefoot or sandals as much as possible. In the winter, she gets cold easily, so she has several pair of thick socks that her mom and sister knit.

Q: When your character thinks of her childhood kitchen, what smell does she associate with it? Sauerkraut? Oatmeal cookies? Paint? Why is that smell so resonant for her?
A: The smell of hard-boiled eggs. Aimee loved easter when she was a kid, and her extended family went all out with egg hunts and a big meal. Deviled eggs were easy enough for her to help out with, so she would spend a lot of time making them and helping to paint eggs.

Q: Your character is doing intense spring cleaning. What is easy for her to throw out? What is difficult for her to part with? Why?
A: Nothing is easy for her to throw out. Much to Constance's consternation, Aimee is a total packrat and doesn't willingly part with much. That said, of the things she should probably throw out, some of her old clothes would probably be the hardest for her to get rid of.

Q: It’s Saturday at noon. What is your character doing? Give details. If he’s eating breakfast, what exactly does he eat? If she’s stretching out in her backyard to sun, what kind of blanket or towel does she lie on?
A: Noon, on a Saturday, it would partly depend on if Constance has work. If so, she'd probably be in her studio, writing, or just listening to music. If not, Aimee'd be doing her best to keep her in bed, even if its just lounging and reading.

Q: What is one strong memory that has stuck with your character from childhood? Why is it so powerful and lasting?
A: Aimee's great-aunt Millie (Millicent) died when she was 8. While Aimee didn't know her terribly well, the funeral and the wake stuck in her mind. The difference between mourning the loss at the funeral and celebrating her life at the wake really affected Aimee in a way she couldn't really articulate at the time. The idea of being sad for ourselves and glad for someone moving on means she's taking Chrys' death about as well as can be expected, and Aimee most likely got very trashed at Chrys' wake.

Q: Your character is getting ready for a night out. Where is she going? What does she wear? Who will she be with?
A: She's going to Bryan, most likely, to Revolutions, Halo, or any of the clubs in that area (Northgate clubs, other than O'Bannon's, really aren't her scene). She tends to wear jeans and tank tops, augmented by one of her leather jackets during the winter. She will almost always have Constance with her, and almost as often Nils.

    Questionnaire (Aimee) Empty New Questions

Post by Josh 06/03/10, 09:03 am

    (Again, questions are from http://www.writingclasses.com/InformationPages/index.php/PageID/106)

(Also, questions are answered in character)

    • What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Our first album. Me, Mikey and Doreen worked for months writing lyrics and music, then all of us spent, all together, a week worth of hours recording. Exhausting, but the work I am the most proud of.

    • What is your idea of perfect happiness?
A warm spring evening with clear skies, soft grass and bare feet. The smell of Ronnie’s cooking, the sound of Bea’s laughter, the sight of Simon’s weary smile. Watching Nils twirl Constance around an imaginary dance floor while I play her favorite song. My people are my happiness.

    • What is your current state of mind?
Tired. Confused as hell. More scared than I thought I could be. Angrier than I can ever remember being.

    • What is your favorite occupation?
Space cowgirl. Ok, no. Seriously, musician. I know my experience has been different from everybody else’s, but I love what I do and wouldn’t trade it for the world.

    • What is your most treasured possession?
Shadowfax. Greatest bike known to man. Built by God and his angels and the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, crafted with my dreams, it its my pride and joy. She howls when I really get a chance to let her run.

    • What or who is the greatest love of your life?
Two questions there, really. What, that’d be music. Not just mine, but in general. Music is amazing. Its like water; it can be warm and inviting or cold and harsh, it crawls over your skin, immerses you, gets inside and fills you up. Nothing in the world has the power of the right piece of music at the right time, Nothing.

Who, heh. Le bijou dans la couronne de ma vie, l'harmonie parfaite à la chanson de mon coeur, Constance Psmith. She is my love, my life, my everything, and, considering the events of the last couple of weeks, I am going to do everything in my power to make sure she knows that.

    • What is your favorite journey?
Rome was nice, and I loved London, but really, my favorite journey is much closer. About an hour east of here, the middle of nowhere, Texas, gets turned into some jovially pervert’s re-imagining of the renaissance. For a weekend or eight, anyone can be anything they want, and it’s sublime. And it doesn’t hurt that Nils, Constance and I sport garb like medieval rockstars.

    • What is your most marked characteristic?
Hopefully? Loyalty. I will stand by my family and friends no matter what. And with everything that’s been going on, it seems like that’s going to matter a lot. We’ve hit some rocky seas, and I will do all in my power to keep us afloat, no matter what.

    • When and where were you the happiest?
Tough question. I’d say Paris, the vacation in 2008. We’d toured museums all day, which isn’t my thing, but it makes Constance happy. We took one of those dinner cruises on the Seine, and Connie was tipsy from those champagne mixer things they make. Ok, so was I. But the lights on the water, they hit Connie’s hair when the when blew it, and she just looked…perfect. Snapshot, lodged in my memory forever. I knew right then she was the love of my life.

    • What is it that you most dislike?
Bigotry. Come on. I’m a gay woman from east Texas with a sister married to a black man. I’ve done my best to avoid the worst, but I refuse to let some small-minded, backwoods, arrogant asshole make me or anyone feel like less than the normal, beautiful human being they are. Fuck that.

    • What is your greatest fear?
…Umm, I guess something happening to one of my parents. Or my sisters, or Jackson. Or one of the guys…

    • What is your greatest extravagance?
My studio and equipment. Yeah, I know, I know, Connie’s told me a million times to save my money. But, come on, a 1968 Epiphone Riviera 12. Of course I’m throwing down on that. Just gorgeous.

    • Which living person do you most despise?
Simon Cowell. Just kidding. I don’t hate people. Its not worth it. Hate requires emotional investment, and I refuse to give someone I don’t like the satisfaction of me thinking about them any more than I absolutely have to.

    • What is your greatest regret?
The year I spent almost partying myself into a casket. I went a whole year punishing either myself or someone who’d proven long before that she didn’t care. I crawled out of that hole by my fingernails, and I am never, ever going down that path again.

    • Which talent would you most like to have?
Cooking. I am in awe of Ronnie. She can make a delicious meal out of condiment packets; I burn ramen. I wish I had half her cooking talent.

    • Where would you like to live?
Austin. I want to visit everywhere I can, but the few times I’ve been to Austin for gigs and to visit Joanna, its been awesome. Its like Mecca for a gay musician in Texas. I really hope Connie’d be ok settling down there.

    • What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
Four a.m., fourth shot of tequila in an hour, looking at the woman across from you and realizing she doesn’t know a thing about you, but you’re already in bed.

    • What is the quality you most like in a man?
A sense of humor. What else am I looking for in a friend?

    • What is the quality you most like in a woman?
A great rack. Ok, seriously, I like a woman that’s comfortable with herself. Tall, short, big, small, whatever, if a woman likes herself, she’s beautiful.

    • What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
I get distracted easily. I know that’s kind of lame, but I have a habit forgetting things and disappointing people inadvertently. I’m working on it, but God knows its till a work in progress.

    • What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Cowardice. I know it sounds harsh, but not standing up for yourself and what you believe in doesn’t help anyone.

    • What do you most value in your friends?
Other than just themselves? Nils’ sense of wonder; I don’t know if its because he’s in philosophy, but Nils has a way of believing in anyone or anything that is absolutely amazing. Bea’s determination; she can be stubborn sometimes, but no one in the world has Beatrice’s focus when she dedicates herself to something. Simon’s curiosity; Simon is always striving to find out more, to discover the truth behind things. Ronnie’s self-sacrifice; I worry that she takes on too much sometimes, but Esperanza would drop anything to help a person in need. And Constance’s authority; whether writing, at work or just in general, Connie has a confidence that just brings out the best in people.

    • Who is your favorite hero of fiction?
Aragorn, son of Arathorn. Great in the books, great in the movies. Heroic through and through.

    • Whose are your heroes in real life?
Joan Jett. Love the music. Dave Grohl, same reason. Joan of Arc; she fought hard, she believed hard. (She also died hard, but I’ll leave that to Bruce Willis) Any member of the Beatles, but especially Paul McCartney.

    • Which living person do you most admire?
Ok, have to cop out twice here and name too people: my parents. I know it wasn’t always easy for my dad in a house full of girls, but he worked harder than anyone I’ve ever known. My mom worked just as hard, and made us all feel loved and safe and special, but never spoiled. I hope I’m even half as good as they were.

    • What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Prudence. You have to get into trouble, mix it up, get dirty. You make mistakes, that’s how you learn. You try things so you know what’s good and what to get the hell away from.

    • On what occasions do you lie?
I try really hard not to lie, because I don’t think they help anyone. That said, if its for a friend, to get them out of trouble, I’ll lie in a heartbeat.

    • Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
Hmm. Not really sure. Though I know Connie hates it when I do the noises for air guitar, which happens more than I care to admit.

    • If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Bigger boobs. Seriously. I love my body, I do. But I like curves on a girl, and I’m not so much stocked in that department. Still, surgery scares the crap out of me and I’ve seen enough medical documentaries not like the idea of water balloons in my chest. Money or not, I’m fine with me as is. Heh, so I guess the answer was nothing. Very Happy

    • What are your favorite names?
I’ve always thought Annabelle was a pretty name, and Kurt is a nice, manly name. I also like virtue names, like Charisty, Patience…Constance.

    • How would you like to die?
    Skydiving at age ninety.

    • If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, what do you think it would be? A hawk, I think. I mean, flying’s got to be the most freeing thing in the world.

    • What is your motto?
Cliché, but Carpe Diem. I’m not letting any day get by that isn’t the best I can make it for me and mine.
