Q: What is your character’s name? Does the character have a nickname?
A: Simon Elliot Mitchell. He’s got a few online handles, the oldest and most established of which is the clever Cy-man042. In his defense, he’d been using that since he was about 14. Some of his cousins call him Si (or Cy, whatever), but no one else seems to have thought of it.
Q: What is your character’s hair color? Eye color?
A: Blonde, getting darker as he gets older, and blue.
Q: What kind of distinguishing facial features does your character have?
A: He’s tall enough to be noted as ‘tall’, without being ridiculously so. He looks really scrawny, but that disguises a fit wiryness that comes from years of long distance running. He’s got some random moles on his back, but other than a few childhood scars, nothing notable. (ETA: Oh, facial features, ha. No, nothing really. possibly some acne scars, we'll see if I can ever find a picture I like :p)
Q: Does your character have a birthmark? Where is it? What about scars? How did he get them?
A: Nothing really. Scars, as mentioned above, from having lots of cousins, playing outdoors, and being around animals.
Q: Who are your character’s friends and family? Who does she surround herself with? Who are the people your character is closest to? Who does he wish he were closest to?
A: Simon is technically an only child, but his uncle Jackson lives with his much larger family on the Mitchell property, so he has always had other kids around. He’s got five cousins from that route, three from his father’s other brother (who live farther away but visited regularly when they were younger and family relations less strained), plus another five from his mother’s sisters. He used to be close with Jackson (Uncle Jack)’s two oldest girls, Sam and Jordan, who are both a few years older than Simon, but they’ve drifted apart in the last 5 years or so (especially since Simon moved away). Now he is closest with Alan, his mother’s sister Alice’s oldest, who is a year younger, now married with a kid of his own, and who escapes online to play videogames with Simon once or twice a week.
Simon actually has a lot of friends, but only a handful that he knows in real life. The others are people he’s met through various forums and chatrooms over the years, and range from fellow linux nerds, Something Awful goons, people he games with online, and folks from other internet subcultures he’s dabbled in. Not all of these friendships are especially close, but some definitely are, and he resents it when people don’t consider the relationships he has formed online to be ‘real’. Especially when people try and pressure him to forgo online commitments in favour of doing something ‘social.’ His real life friends are mostly his gaming group, though he’s on good terms with some of the other grad students in his department as well. Of his core group, he’s probably closest to Connie, as they have the most in common, and she spends the most time online. Bea and Aimee both remind him of his cousins, and he relates fairly well to them as well.
Q: Where was your character born? Where has she lived since then? Where does she call home?
A: He was born in the city hospital at Green River, Wyoming, and grew up at the Mitchell ranch about an hour’s drive away. He has lived there, spent some summers at his aunt Grace’s house in green River, and now, lived in College Station. He lived in dorms his first two years before moving in to his own (small) place at the beginning of his third year. Home is still the Mitchell Ranch, as the place has a deep emotional resonance for him, whether despite or because of the current tensions surrounding the property. Whatever his other thoughts on the matter, his name is in the will at the moment.
Secretly, he’d like to leave the running of the place to his cousins, and then just move back and work some kind of internet job from the place, or maybe own a satellite, but he knows that’s not the sort of answer that will make other people happy.
Q: Where does your character go when he’s angry?
A: Online. There are usually people to bitch at, zombies and other monsters to kill, and he can always work up a good rant, whether or not such things ever see the light of day (mostly not).
Q: What is his biggest fear? Who has he told this to? Who would he never tell this to? Why?
A: he simultaneous fears disappointing his family, and also getting trapped doing something he hates. Obviously he hasn’t told them that, and I don’t think he ever would. He doesn’t really talk about it much, but it is something he is more likely to have told his online friends than his RL ones, and he has a easier time opening up out of a face to face confrontation.
Q: Does she have a secret?
A: Maybe? He has a secret, but it is probably not as big a deal as he thinks it is.
Q: What makes your character laugh out loud?
A: Epic moments of Awesome, but that is possible gleeful/meglomanical laughter/cackling.
Q: When has your character been in love? Had a broken heart?
A: No, though he has had some serious crushes, including one on Connie that he managed to subdued. His biggest failed crush, though, was on a girl from a rival track team that he saw a few times a year in high school. He's made slow progress at befriending her, and had gotten to the point where they would hang out together a bit at meets, but then she hurt her knee (he was told) between mets in grade 12 and he never saw her again. Jeanie Cassidy - she did pole vault and hurdles.
And the weird questions
Q: What is in your character’s refrigerator right now? On his bedroom floor? On his nightstand? In his garbage can?
A: Mostly condiments, milk and eggs, and some old take out. There isn’t much on his floor – he keeps it clean since he doesn’t have much space and hates being disorganized. He doesn’t really have a nightstand, but his desk has a tidy pile of school books and some action figures. In his garbage can is empty takeout boxes, the wrapper for a new spool of cds, and empty soda bottles.
Q: Look at your character’s feet. Describe what you see there. Does he wear dress shoes, gym shoes, or none at all? Is he in socks that are ratty and full of holes? Or is he wearing a pair of blue and gold slippers knitted by his grandmother?
A: worn trainers that have been retired to ‘general use’ shoes and socks that probably match and probably don’t need to be thrown away quite yet.
Q: When your character thinks of her childhood kitchen, what smell does she associate with it? Sauerkraut? Oatmeal cookies? Paint? Why is that smell so resonant for her?
A: His grandmother’s cooking and the rye and ginger that his grandfather drank every night.
Q: Your character is doing intense spring cleaning. What is easy for him to throw out? What is difficult for him to part with? Why?
A: Simon doesn’t think that he accumulates a lot of ‘stuff’, but that’s a total lie. He is selective – he will spend lots of money on single fairly unique collectible items, and has a lot of spare computer parts ‘just in case.’ He also tends to hold on to clothes a little longer than it probably feasible, but he generally will make larger purges of stuff in one go rather than throw stuff away a bit at a time. It isn’t that he gets attached, he often just doesn’t really think about it. Also, he hates buying pants.
Q: It’s Saturday at noon. What is your character doing? Give details. If he’s eating breakfast, what exactly does he eat? If she’s stretching out in her backyard to sun, what kind of blanket or towel does she lie on?
A: Saturday noon is prime ‘catching up on sleep’ time, usually a nap after a long run in the morning.
Q: What is one strong memory that has stuck with your character from childhood? Why is it so powerful and lasting?
A: From his childhood, one distinct memory he has is of sitting on the porch swing with his grandfather – a sometimes hard man who worked almost right up to the end – about a year before he died. Simon was about 8 or 9, and had been drinking a soda out of a glass bottle while his grandfather sipped his whiskey, as the sun set. They sat just quietly for a while, and then his grandfather put his hands on Simon’s shoulder, and sat that way for a while. There were coyotes howling in the distances, and eventually, the old man looked over at him, and said, “That just about sound like freedom, don’t it boy?” Simon nodded, even though he wasn’t really sure what his grandfather meant, but he just smiles a thin smile, and followed it up with "Well it ain’t.”
That exchange stuck with him mostly on account of it being a little strange, and he still has no idea what it was about, other that the fact that his grandfather turned a little odd after his wife died. He now has his grandfather’s pocket knife, and it is on the newly composed ‘List of things Nils isn’t allowed to touch’.
Q: Your character is getting ready for a night out. Where is he going? What does he wear? Who will he be with?
A: A night out for Simon generally means going to see Aimee perform, so typically Revolutions with Connie, Nils, Bea, Ronnie, and Chrys ( ;_; ). He doesn’t really put a lot of thought into dressing *up* for things, so probably just whatever he was wearing that day – t-shirt and jeans.
